New Blog on the Hairpin!

I'm pretty excited about my new column on the Hairpin. It's called "The Pros and Cons of Dating" and it basically goes through all the arguments for dating a certain type of person, such as someone you work with or someone you know from high school. I also stop by randomly to talk about dance routines I made up with a friend or getting drunk and doing stuff. You can check out the whole lot of 'em here.

Cinema Speakeasy

The Cinema Speakeasy part, well, that’s a no-brainer. An established and successful monthly screening series focused on growing and celebrating independent film: nothing not to like.

San Francisco, in all of its high school outcast that grows up to be a billionaire weirdness, a city packed with a “I do what I want” attitude giving way to some of the most creative minds in the media age—now that’s brilliant.

Ladies and Gentleman, we bring you Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco.

Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco is a monthly screening series that will showcase and celebrate the best in independent film. We’ll provide the off the beaten track movies, booze and space for like-minded community to gather; you provide the like-minded (or, even better, not so much) community. Combined with theme nights, games, raffles, panel discussions and filmmaker Q&A’s, we think it’s going to be a damn fine night.

It's a wonderful thing when you get to not only meet, but work with your heroes. I currently have the pleasure of production managing the next film from Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, the fantastic filmmakers behind "Boys of Baraka" and the Oscar-nominated "Jesus Camp". I'm happy to report that they are wonderful, smart, honest women. I would expect nothing less of course, but sometimes, we all get surprised. Look out for the newest special delivery, "Detroit Hustles Harder" in Spring 2011!

Today I read a NYT article about a young man who has created a CBS show starring William Shatner and is publishing a book set to debut at No. 8 on the NYT bestseller list, based on his highly popular twitter feed (which I am a follower of) entitled "Shit My Dad Says".

The third (that I know of) in a string of 'humble blog direct to blow up like the world trade' phenomenon, such as "Stuff White People Like" and "Texts From Last Night", this is an awesome and fascinating trend to behold. I think it's great that these sites, which are essentially aggregating contemporary behaviors and at once documenting and defining social trends are being used for Hollywood fodder, bbecause lawd knows this town could use some new ideas. I do hope that these shows staff talented writers that can truly convey the voice that made these sites popular in the first place, and not water them down to the same sitcom drivel that we've been force fed for years. In any event, I'm happy that these creative entrepreneurs are getting theirs, and I do hope that other voices besides young white males can get in on the action as well.

I have recently signed with Principato-Young in Los Angeles, working with Evan Cavic. They are a fantastic management shop and I am happy to be in such company as Will Arnett and Jonah Hill. They've also produced the Reno 911 franchise, which I've always thought was hilarious. I'm currently working with Evan to write a romcom spec, and polishing my pilot, The Slut Chronicles. I hope you have as much fun watching these as I'm having writing them. Stay tuned.

I haven't updated in a while because I've been so busy. Mostly with my new job at ITVS.

ITVS is an amazing company that funds, produces, and promotes independent film on Public Television. Our main outlet is PBS strands such as POV and Independent Lens; but we also deliver to series like American Masters, Frontline, and other public broadcasting systems like BBC. We've co-produced such powerful documentaries as Boys of Baraka, ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room, and Lost Boys of Sudan. As a production manager, I oversee about 20 docs at a time throughout the progression of production; managing their schedule and budget, as well as viewing and giving feedback on cuts. I am lucky to work with such amazing filmmakers and help shape the content on every American's television set!

"The Relationship" selected for "Foreplays" Variety Show!

My comedic short play, "The Relationship" has been selected for stage as part of "Foreplays", an all women's revue playing in Monday nights in through the month of November. The show will stage at Off-Market Theater, which I'm pleased to announce has recently won the SF Weekly readers poll for "Best Theater" in 2009! I'm super psyched to be in cahoots with these guys. I have recently been interviewed for the documentary film "Wonder Women" directed by Joslyn Rose Lyons. The film is about both emerging and established women in the arts: their inspirations, challenges, and victories. The cast is amazing and I am honored to be asked to participate!

Well, I didn't win ShortLived. Wamp wamp. It was a great run though-and I had the joy of seeing my words come alive on stage, made a few people laugh, and made some new friends. I don't doubt that I'll continue to be involved with the Piano Fight Crew-a great group that sincerely wants to have a good time, and wants the audience to have a good time. Hopefully I'll get a recording of the performance soon so you call all see with your eyes the brilliance that was my company. The Boyfriend Store makes the finals!

San Francisco-based theater company, Piano Fight, is currently holding a short-play competition for playwrights. Held in rounds lasting 4 shows, Piano Fight fully produces and stages selected pieces from west coast playwrights. The audience votes on their favorite pieces. The top four move on the next round, the bottom four are dropped and new pieces added.
